BBC RADIO MANCHESTER
(2 weeks -Â November 2019)
As well as working with and learning from professional radio journalists, I also produced recorded packages and vox pops on a variety of topics, whilst on a two-week work experience placement at BBC Radio Manchester. My work was broadcast on air on the drivetime shows throughout the two weeks.
97-YEAR-OLD VOLUNTEER IS STILL GOING STRONG AT STRETFORD FOODBANK

Ninety-seven-year-old Joan Hibberd has been helping people all her life and is still doing today. From being a librarian to a lollypop lady, Joan welcomes people to Stretford Foodbank every Tuesday.
The mum of six related back to the time she was inspired by her parents when they welcomed and looked after 15 refugee children, who fled from the Spanish Civil War in the late 1930s.
She hopes her children, 13 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren can carry on her legacy.
WHO DO THE PEOPLE OF SALFORD THINK DESERVES A STATUE IN MANCHESTER AND WHY?

After a statue of Indian independence icon Mahatma Gandhi was unveiled outside Manchester cathedral to mark the 150th anniversary of his birth in 1869, I asked members of the public at MediaCityUK on who they think deserves a statue in the city.

The statue intended to celebrate Manchester's "multi-cultural and multi-faith" society and Ghandi had visited the city on his way to see mill workers in Lancashire in 1931.
A TATTOO TREND INKED INTO A MANCHESTER FAMILY FOR YEARS

A mother and daughter work together at Infinity Tattoo Studio in Urmston and have over 80 tattoos between them.
Artist Nettie Bethell has worked in the industry for 17 years and introduced tattooing to her daughter when she was 14.
Sarah Nash set up Infinity Tattoo Studio in 2013 and is now her mum’s boss, and it's a ‘lifestyle’ that has been routed in the family since 2002.

RADIO BULLETIN PRESENTING

During second year at university, BBC Radio Manchester bulletin news presenter, Paul Lockitt, visited my class to provide one-to-one voice training for the radio.
After also listening to and shadowing him whilst on placement at the BBC, I practised presenting one of the morning bulletins he broadcast live on air.

After a British teenage boy almost died after vaping caused a catastrophic reaction in his lungs, I went out of the newsroom to gather vox pops from the people of Salford on their views on vaping.

WIGAN WARRIORS OFFICIAL PODCAST
(March 2020 - Present)
In March 2020, Wigan Warriors launched its first ever Official Club podcast. I and fellow broadcaster Joe Mills are the co-hosts and are joined by special guests every two weeks to discuss a different topic from the world of Rugby League, bringing fans closer to the inner workings of the Club. Each episode is available to listen to on the Apple podcast app, Spotify podcast and the Podbean podcast app. Video versions are also available on Wigan Warriors TV.

In the first episode, myself and Joe Mills discuss all things international rugby league with Wigan and England captain Sean O'Loughlin. There's also listener questions for the Wigan captain and a message to the Warriors fans from Head Coach Adrian Lam in light of the coronavirus pandemic. This podcast was recorded before the major developments of the coronavirus pandemic in the UK, including social distancing measures.

Salford Now is the University of Salford's in-house news organisation and as part of BA (Hons) Broadcast Journalism), myself and my fellow colleagues were tasked to find stories, gather content and publish it on different platforms -Â including Salford Now's radio output, which broadcasts live news bulletins and programmes on Soundcloud.

A Salford author is using computer drop-in sessions to retrieve the final quarter of a novel he wrote on a floppy disk 30 years ago.

After emigrating to South Africa in the 1980s, Mr Gordon Wilson wrote a story about a man who tried to use financial secrets to swindle the stock market for his own financial benefit.
​
And now a regular at the Langworthy Cornerstone Centre in Salford, ex-Royal Marine Commando Mr Wilson attends digital workshops to practice his online skills.
SALFORD BIKE SHOP PROVIDES E-BIKES FOR NURSES AT ORDSALL HEALTH SURGERY

Growing from a storage container to a small shop on Chapel Street, Manchester Bike Hire specialise in e-bikes for business and family purposes.
The Ordsall Health Surgery are benefitting from the use with nurses getting on their bikes to visit people who are in need.

Former University of Salford student Pavol Gajdos set up the company and talks about its increase in gear over recent years.
SALFORD NOW RADIO PROGRAMME 1
9th December 2019
This is the first 20-minute radio programme (bulletin included) I produced during Salford Now newsdays - as part of the Journalism Practice module.

The programme is presented by fellow students, Rachael Allison and Rene McIntosh and includes stories on NHS waiting times, Eccles' RSPCA at Christmas and a pensioner who takes on the Ironman World Championships.

This is the second 20-minute radio programme (bulletin included) I produced during Salford Now newsdays - as part of the Journalism Practice module.

It includes stories on living with dementia - from a former Salford rugby league coach, an increase in reported cases of flu in Salford and what one church in Salford is doing to have an impact on the local area.
​
The programme also includes added features such as a menu, two live two-ways in the studio, a coming up menu and a news wrap.

SALFORD UNIVERSITY STUDENTS 'TAKEOVER' RED DEVILS MATCH

Salford University’s partnership with Super League club Salford Red Devils has developed massively in 2019.
Students will ‘takeover’ Salford’s game against St Helens at the AJ Bell Stadium and I speak to the people involved on both sides to see how the event has come about.
SHOCK RADIO
(October 2017 - Present)
Shock Radio is Manchester's biggest student radio station and is home to the University of Salford. The radio station broadcasts live 24 hours a day from main campus on its website and shows are uploaded daily to Mixcloud.
During my three years at University, I have been involved heavily at Shock, presenting, producing and commentating for the sports team. During the second year (October 2018 - May 2019), I was the Head of Sport and organised special one-off outside broadcast events, as well as leading the team every Monday from 8-9pm when the Sports Show was live on air.
SRA AWARDS SPORTS PROGRAMMING ENTRY

This is the five minute entry I submitted for the Best Sports Programming category at the Student Radio Awards after being the Head of Sport. The entry was shortlisted for the awards night which took place at London's O2 Arena in November 2019.

The SRA entry consists of some of the best bits from the Varsity 2019 12-hour live coverage, as well as a few snippets from the Sports Show.
VARSITY 2019 DAY RUNDOWN

Varsity is the biggest sporting event in the University calendar. The event took place on campus at Salford University, as Chester University visited for one day to take on Salford in 25 different sports, ranging from rowing to ultimate frisbee and equestrian to pole fitness.
As the Head of Sport at Shock, I wanted to capture all the action, atmosphere and celebrations and this was achieved with a mammoth 12-hour broadcast across the day of reporting, commentary, presenting and interviewing. The main aim was to reflect the day for those who could not attend - I wanted Shock to bring Varsity to the listeners through the power of audio. We provided pre and post-match interviews, live commentary and broadcasted live across campus to provide updates outside for all supporters.
SALFORD RED DEVILS 'TAKEOVER'Â COMMENTARY

Salford University ‘took over’ Salford Red Devils’ Betfred Super League game against St Helens at the AJ Bell Stadium. Shock Radio were heavily involved on the night, as it consisted of an outside broadcast with live match commentary from the press box, alongside professional radio organisations such as BBC Radio 5 Live, BBC Radio Manchester and Wish FM.
Myself and fellow Shock member, Ollie Thorpe, commentated on the match, which was broadcast live.
2018 TWO CITIES VARSITY CHALLENGE COMMENTARY

The Two Cities Varsity Rugby League Challenge consists of Salford University facing Manchester University every year. The two teams play separately to the main Varsity event, and of recent years have played at Manchester's Regional Arena.
Shock Radio cover the game every year and myself and fellow student, Ollie Thorpe, commentated live on air.
SHOCK SPORTS SHOW

The Shock Sports team has 40 active members who produce on air content - discussing and debating the weekly sports news and the big talking points locally, regionally and nationally. It includes features such as live reporting on TV football games, which are shown on the big screens in the Shock studio, as well as the weekly sports team quiz - featuring ten questions from ten different sports.

THE FOOTBALL CLUB PODCAST
(October 2018 - February 2019)
Myself and fellow University of Salford student, Sam Burton, set up a new football podcast - The Football Club Podcast.
​
Recording at Utter Radio studios at the University's MediaCityUK campus, we talk about the breaking football stories, analyse the Premier League and Championship and discuss the rumours in the footballing world.
